Some people run a humidifier at night to help. I had originally bought the "Quartz Silicone" goggles. Buy them before you need them as they can be difficult to find. These add moisture and actually help your eye heal. If your cornea rips, use an OTC product called Muro 128. I would also recommend some type of heavy nightime eye lubricant right before sleep. They also come with two sets of removable pads you canĪdd moisture to before wearing. Lagophthalmos is associated with exposure keratopathy, poor sleep, and persistent exposure-related symptoms. This can result in a range of conditions from mild epithelial changes to severe exposure ulcers (Katz and Kaufman, 1977). These goggles are made well and extremely comfortable. Nocturnal lagophthalmos is the inability to close the eyelids while sleeping. I used safety pins wrapped in medical tape to keep the straps from moving. I recommend these TranquileyesĪfter a day or two, the straps will start to slip, and fall off while you sleep. Don't count on having the safety blink/recoil anymore.Īnyone with this condition looking for relief, here's my best advice. If ripping your cornea suddenly becomes your new normal, invest in some sleep goggles. Yes, that's screwed up, but it's true for me. You also need to be very careful about your eyes otherwise now, because your pain threshold has gone up, you are more likely to not flinch back reflexively to protect your eyes. Eyes open and rubbed across sheets or a pillow - a whole other world of pain. If you are a prone sleeper, try sleeping on your back, or if you're a roller, do what you can to mitigate that. Way better than Ice in a bag or the frozen sweet-peas in a plastic bag trick. I still sometimes wake up with very angry corneas.īack when it was bad, I would take those gel-freezer packs that you get in shipped packages of food or some meds, put them on a surface in the freezer that shaped them to fit my face, and when it got bad, I would slip one or two inside of a pillow case (you SHOULD NOT put them directly on your skin - you'll get freezer burns doing that), fold the pillow case over to regulate the temp and lay them on my eyes - it would give some relief. When it happened it was sort of a dull explosion of pain and than it felt like I had a handful of beach sand crammed into both eyes.īecause I used to be hyper-thyroid my eyes bugged out and now I have to deal with my eyes being partly open at night, but I don't have it as bad as you do. I have scraped off both my corneas by accident (sparring partner's thumb guard raked across both my eyes, my mistake, not his) and had 20/200 vision for a while.
